Understanding Kratom Lab Testing and COAs: What to Look For

Learn how to read a kratom Certificate of Analysis (COA), what tests are performed, and why third-party lab testing is the most important quality indicator for kratom.

Why Lab Testing Matters

Third-party lab testing is the single most important quality assurance measure in the kratom industry. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent laboratory verifies that a kratom product is pure, properly identified, free from contaminants, and accurately labeled. Without lab testing, consumers have no way to verify what they are actually purchasing.

What Tests Should Be Performed

#

Alkaloid Content Analysis

This test measures the percentage of key alkaloids in the kratom product, primarily:
- Mitragynine — The dominant alkaloid, typically 1.0 to 2.0 percent in quality powder
- 7-Hydroxymitragynine — The potent minor alkaloid, typically below 0.1 percent in natural leaf

Alkaloid content tells you about the potency and quality of the product. Higher mitragynine generally indicates fresher, higher-quality kratom.

#

Heavy Metal Testing

Kratom is a plant that grows in soil, which means it can potentially absorb heavy metals from its environment. Testing should check for:
- Lead — Must be below safe limits
- Mercury — Must be below safe limits
- Arsenic — Must be below safe limits
- Cadmium — Must be below safe limits

#

Microbial Testing

This tests for harmful bacteria and microorganisms including:
- Salmonella — Must be absent
- E. coli — Must be absent
- Total aerobic plate count — Must be within acceptable limits
- Yeast and mold — Must be within acceptable limits

#

Pesticide Screening

Tests for common agricultural pesticides that could be present if the kratom was not grown using organic practices.

How to Read a COA

A properly formatted COA should include:

- Laboratory name and credentials — The lab should be ISO-accredited
- Date of testing — Should be recent and match the batch you are purchasing
- Sample identification — Batch number that matches the product label
- Test results — Clearly stated pass/fail results with specific values
- Reference ranges — What the acceptable limits are for each test
- Analyst signature — Signed by the laboratory technician or director

Red Flags to Watch For

- No COA available — If a vendor cannot provide lab results, do not buy from them
- In-house testing only — Testing should be done by an independent, third-party lab
- Outdated results — COAs should correspond to the specific batch being sold
- Missing tests — A complete COA should include alkaloid, heavy metal, and microbial testing at minimum
- Unusually high 7-OH levels — In raw powder, very high 7-hydroxymitragynine could indicate adulteration

Our Commitment to Transparency

At BuyKratomShop.com, every product we sell has a corresponding COA from an independent, ISO-accredited laboratory. We test every batch for alkaloid content, heavy metals, microbial contaminants, and pesticides. These results are available to customers upon request and demonstrate our commitment to providing only the highest quality kratom products.
